Portrait FAQs

portrait photo shoot frequently asked questions

How long does a photo session take?
It depends on how many people are involved and their ages, but as a guideline, an outdoor shoot will take about 1-2 hours and a studio shoot at home will take 2-3 hours (because of the set-up time). This allows plenty of time for breaks too. Find out more about what to expect here.

How much space do you need?
The studio set-up requires at least 2x2metres, which sometimes means moving a bit of furniture. If you are unsure, please call for advice.

What is the best age for baby photographs?
For newborns, between 1-3 weeks is ideal, when they are still very tiny and sleepy. I use predominantly natural light in your home. For older babies, a good time is when they are sitting up and supporting themselves, as this gives more options for them to be photographed alone. I personally think 6 months - 1 year is a lovely age, because they are full of expression.

What clothes should we wear?
You should be comfortable. Think about matching your colours/tones and if you have opted for the studio style, avoid white and very pale pastel colours (unless your skin is very dark, as you may look "washed out" otherwise). I tend to prefer the look of plain colours, as lots of patterns can be distracting. If the session is in your home, there will be time for a clothes change. Please take a look at my Pin Board for inspiration.

Will the photos be in colour or black and white?
I take all of the photos in colour. During the enhancement phase, I change some photos into black and white, if I feel it will improve the image. Though I show you a mixture during the viewing, all of the photos will be available in colour and black & white. If you have a preference, I will take that into account during enhancement.

Can you remove spots/marks? Do you airbrush?
So much is possible nowadays, but my approach to enhancement is sensible, meaning that I remove spots or reduce redness, but I won't change your appearance by removing all trace of freckles or removing a scar for instance. If there is something you are concerned about or want to ask if something is possible, then do please ask.

Why does the full set of digital images cost more than frames?
Having the digital images gives you the ability to print as many times as you wish and to share electronically with family and friends. As well as the 3 hours for the shoot, I spend around 4-6 hours editing and enhancing your photos for you. Also, remember that you are not just paying for my time and expertise - the equipment used is very expensive too.

Can I just buy prints?
I have decided not to offer prints as a standalone product and instead offer the digital image. I would need to price prints very high in order to cover my costs. If you purchase the digital image, I am happy to arrange a professional 10x8inch print for £15. I also include free prints as a bonus in some of my pre-paid packages.

How long will it take to get my products?
Digitals images will be delivered within a week of payment being received. All other products take about 4 weeks from payment being received.
